Chapter 12

Brody

“I owe you an apology,” Camila said.

Brody and Camila sat at a booth, glancing at Toni’s menus, which was the hottest new Italian restaurant in Maple Hills. And surveying the menu would have to wait. Brody couldn’t believe Camila’s comment. Camila never apologized to Brody before. So, he had to have been having a nightmare. That was the only logical explanation Brody could think of. Stubborn people like Camila didn’t apologize. It wasn’t in their nature. And Brody was even fine with that. He gave up on fixing his sister a long time ago. Being his sibling meant Brody tolerated more from Camila than he would Asher or any other romantic partner.

Brody put his hand by his ear. “Come again? I didn’t quite hear you.”

She wrinkled her nose. “Don’t be a dick. I’m trying to do the right thing here.”

“I thought you said you wanna say you’re sorry. But that can’t be it. Camila Spencer is right about everything.”

Camila frowned. “Don’t refer to me as if I’m not here. No offense or anything, but that’s kinda creepy.”

“My bad.”

Her attention returned to the menu. “I’m not pranking. I’m truly sorry for how I’ve been acting about your relationship with Asher. Agreeing to be your boyfriend means you won and I lost. So, congrats. Hopefully, you get everything you ever wanted.”

“This isn’t a game, Camila.”

“You know what I meant.”

His shoulder twitched. “You might wanna take back your apology after this. However, I don’t care.”

“Huh?”

“Asher’s been a mess lately.”

“What happened? Did you do something to piss him off?”

“No,” Brody said, shaking his head. “It’s like Victor pissed him off.”

“What does his dead fiancé have to do with anything? Don’t tell me Victor came back from the dead. That’d be the type of thing that’d happen on one of my soap operas.”

Brody rolled his eyes—even he had his limits. And his conversation with Camila proved no exception. This moment wasn’t the time to discuss soap operas. Not when Brody didn’t know how to comfort Asher. It didn’t matter if Brody never met Victor or witnessed Asher and Victor’s relationship. A two hundred IQ wasn’t required for empathy. If the situation were reversed, Brody would’ve been devastated if he discovered his dead fiancé cheated on him. No explanation necessary about how the truth sometimes hurt. Unfortunately, people weren’t perfect. And they fucked up.

“Sorry,” Camila said. “I shouldn’t have gone off on that tangent.”

“Don’t stop on my account.”

Camila gave Brody a small smile. “You were saying?”

“His previous relationship was shattered in an instant.”

“That sucks.”

“No need to state the obvious. But yeah. You’re right.”

Camila patted Brody’s hand. “This could work in your favor?”

Brody frowned. Only his sister could worry about finding some angle to work. And Brody didn’t know whether to be sad or disappointed in Camila’s devious ways. Ash’s pain wasn’t something Brody wanted to spin to his advantage. Only a cruel person would do that. And sometimes, Brody didn’t have to speculate about why Camila remained single. As harsh as the idea sounded, Camila’s attitude needed major revamping.
